Shelby began his career as a race car driver, competing in events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 12 Hours of Sebring. He won the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans alongside co-driver Roy Salvadori, becoming the only American to win the race driving a British car.
In the 1960s, Shelby was recruited by Ford Motor Company to develop a high-performance version of the Mustang, which became the Shelby Mustang. He also worked on the Ford GT40, helping the Ford team to win the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans.
In the late 1960s, Shelby formed a partnership with AC Cars to produce the AC Cobra, which combined a lightweight British chassis with a powerful American engine. The resulting car, known as the Shelby Cobra, was an instant success and became one of the most iconic cars of the era.
Shelby also designed and built numerous other race cars and street cars throughout his career, including the Shelby Series 1 and the Shelby Series 2, both of which were powered by Ford engines.
In the early 2000s, Shelby began working with Ford again, developing a modern version of the Shelby Mustang. This car, known as the Shelby GT500, was a huge success and is still in production today.
In 2007, Carroll Shelby was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame, recognizing his achievements and contribution to the automotive industry.
