2020 Ford MustangThe History of the Ford Mustang

The original Mustang was launched in April 1964 as a 1965 model to instant success. Its styling proved wildly popular and inspired a host of imitators. It was initially introduced as a two-door hardtop and convertible with a range of six-cylinder and V8 powerplants. The first Mustang was based on the platform of the second-generation North American Ford Falcon, a compact car.

From 1965 to 1973, the Mustang was designed and built as a "pony car" to compete against the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, AMC Javelin, and other sporty coupes of the time. During this time, the Mustang sold very well, becoming one of the most successful products in Ford's history.

It received a significant redesign for the 1974 model year, which saw it move from the Falcon platform to its own platform. This generation was larger and heavier than its predecessors but still sold very well. However, Mustangs took on a more aerodynamic shape for their 1979 model year redesign. This generation was also the first to be offered with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

A Continuing Legacy

The third generation of Ford Mustangs was produced between 1979 and 1993. These cars were built on the Fox platform, the first unibody design for the Mustang. The most popular body style was the hatchback, although a coupe was also available.

Third-generation Mustangs were powered by various engines, ranging from the economical 2.3L four-cylinder to the powerful 5.0L V8. A four-speed manual transmission was standard, with an optional three-speed automatic. Many unique options were available for this generation, including a convertible version and a high-performance "SVO" version with a turbocharged engine. This generation is often seen as the start of the modern era for the iconic muscle car.

The fourth-generation Mustang was introduced in 1994 and was the first to feature an independent rear suspension. It was also the first generation to be offered with a V8 engine since the 1979 model year. Fifth-generation Mustangs in 2005 featured retro styling that paid homage to the original Mustangs of the 1960s and brought back the V8 engine option.

The sixth-generation Mustang was introduced in 2015 and featured a fully independent rear suspension. This generation was offered with both V6 and V8 engines. Today, the Mustang has a range of engine options and continues to be one of the most popular cars on the road.

2022 Ford MustangWhat Makes the Mustang So Special?

Some people wonder why the Ford Mustang has sold so well over the years and remains a popular choice for drivers. One reason for this might be because of its iconic design, which has been associated with muscle cars since its launch in 1964. It has a classic look and feel that people have come to love over the years.

It also has consistently delivered excellent performance over the years. Its powerful engines and responsive handling make it a great choice for drivers who want a sporty ride.

Another likely reason is that a Mustang can be heavily personalized with aftermarket parts and accessories to create a one-of-a-kind ride. This allows drivers to express their individual style and make the car their own. Putting a unique touch on a vehicle makes it more personal.

Because the Mustang has been around for decades, it has become a cultural icon. The famous car has been featured in movies and television shows, helping to cement its status as an American classic.

The Modern Mustang

Modern versions of the legendary Mustang provide the same excellent performance and handling that the beloved pony car is known for. More robust engines than ever before now live under the Mustang's hood, giving daredevil drivers and speed enthusiasts the thrills they crave.

Newer performance packages allow the Mustang to hit incredible speeds. For instance, the Mach 1 will not only help you feel stuck to the road whether you're rounding curves or hitting the straightaway at a blazing 168 mph, the Mustang's max speed. Customize it any way you like to give it your personal flair, choosing its appearance, powertrain, and performance options.

How Do You Want Your Engine?

The Mustang will go as far as you want to push it. With plenty of powertrain options, you can get as much torque and speed as you need. One option is the 2.3L EcoBoost® Performance engine. This high-performance bad boy brings out a whopping 330 hp and 350 lb.-ft. of torque.

Want even more power? Try the GT Performance engine with twin independent variable cam timing (Ti-VCT). This technology boosts both performance and fuel economy while managing to reduce emissions at the same time. You'll love its incredible 420 hp and 410 lb.-ft. of torque.

If you're still not impressed, check out the Shelby® GT500® Performance package. Light-hearted drivers need not apply for this supercharged 'Stang that provides an outstanding 625 lb.-ft. of torque and more than 760 hp. Its 5.2L supercharged V8 engine will have you saying, "Yeehaw!"
